I would change a few things. The fact that Mormons were forced to give up a sincerely held religious belief or face persecution is not "wise" in my opinion, but sad. Just because you don't like the idea of Indians smoking Peote for their religion doesn't mean they don't have a right to practice it. The best argument would be that you can never out-promise the Democrats. If you say "We're federalists" and promise not to impose your traditional marriage views through law, the Dems will say you're still a bigot and will champion overturning any state law or constitution which doesn't recognize "marriage equality." Also, since people are now cheering for polygamy, arguing that gay marriage will lead to polygamy does the left's job for it.

As I stated in another response, the only issue with polygamy is whether a person can claim more than one "legal" spouse for benefits under Social Security rules, tax laws, immigration, veterans benefits, etc. Do you want 6 widows claiming Social Security survivors benefits because one polygamist died?

Although a man can have only one "legal" wife and a woman only one legal husband, it is not illegal to live with and bed with as many people as you want. You can call them your "spiritual" wives. Promiscuity is not illegal, and adultorery is only illegal in military justice. The FLDS sects practice polygamy with impunity, and are not prosecuted untess there is welfare fraud or an underage "wife."

But, I believe, he is making a serious error in abandoning the civil right of marriage. The Republican Party was founded in opposition to two historic wrongs. The party’s first platform in 1856 denounced “slavery and polygamy—the twin relics of barbarism.” Slavery was finally put down with a terrible toll—630,000 Americans dead in the Civil War. The new movie, Lincoln, tells the dramatic story of the...
