smoking CLEARLY causes others harm, but being obese(and I'm not) doesn't harm anyone else, unless they fall on someone when they vapor-lock. Or if you have to sit next to them on a plane... Yes,the medical costs for obese are greater,so they should be charged more for insurance, just as poor drivers are charged more for car insurance. My parents smoked heavily, and it did a LOT of harm to me from just being around it,and even today, brief whiffs of 2nd-hand tobacco smoke affects my breathing, makes my eyes water. Smoking is the cause of many fires, indoors and in the forests. Both with great loss of life and property. Smoking is VILE and should be eradicated.

one more thing;a woman who gets an abortion does NO harm to anyone else. MYOB.
that's between her,her husband,and her doctor.

a fertilized egg or embryo is NOT a human being.
it may never attach to the uterus,or may never develop a brain and a soul. many embryos never attach and are flushed out during menses.
just because a lump of cells has human DNA does not make it a human being.

Jay Wye. FYI, abortions are NOT performed on embryos who have never attached and are flushed out during menses. Wake up and read about real abortions.

Just months into gestation even the sex of the child can often be determined. Don't tell me that isn't a baby. You decieve yourself when you call an inutero child just a "lump of cells". In reality a fetus is a human being on life support. Certainly the child cannot live outside the mother's womb, but a child that has been born cannot live without the life support of someone who will take care of it. It will need that life support for many years after it's birth.

The ones that are flushed out, you don't have to be concerned with. It's the ones that would be born if they were not deliberately aborted. God tells us in Jer. ch. 1:5, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations".

She does no harm to anyone else except to the baby that she muredered.

JW - you are a lump of cells too. And that is probably all you will ever be.

Jay Wye,
"a fertilized egg or embryo is NOT a human being. "

I don't think unfertilized eggs are what abortions are for, they are for the fertilized eggs that are developing humans and will result in the birth of a child if left undisturbed. The purpose of an abortion is to abort another human life thus the word "abortion".

"Your freedom is likely to be someone else's harm."

So says bioethicist Daniel Callahan of the Hastings Center, responding to the recent controversy over provisions in Obamacare that penalize smokers.

In the era of the Bloomberg ban on Big Gulps, the proper role, if any, that government should have in the lifestyle decisions of the American people has been a hot topic of debate among policymakers, politicians, and pundits. Like so many others, this question draws out the moral philosophy of the Left in America. In general, Progressives – as they like to be called – are loathe to pass...
