Kaboom really captures rather succinctly the Left's misunderstanding of the 2008 election. The results weren't ideologically driven. The Democratic party did not re-invigorate people's belief in the competency of government. The vote was a repudiation of President Bush.

In particular, it showed voter anger at the perceived incompetence of his administration. President Obama won an election when the current Republican president was historically unpopular, the Republican brand was tarnished by scandals and incompetence, the economy was beginning to swoon into recession right before the election, and the Republican nominee had only lukewarm support among his party faithful.

Historically, the out of power party always wins...
