All re-elections are the incumbents to lose. Carter was 63, Reagan was 32. Then Carter was buried under a 10-pt landslide. My politically incorrect rule-of-thumb: when unemployment rate is 7.5% or higher, there will be a change of Party in the White House, everything else is noise. One cannot be ideological when one is hungry.

Charlotte, N.C. -- Going by the conventional rules of American politics, the Democratic Convention this week was an unmitigated disaster. And, going by the same rules, GOP convention was a disaster, too. So, either the rules of American politics have fundamentally changed, or at least one of the parties is taking an enormous gamble.

Since the Nixon years, the GOP has enjoyed a marked advantage over the Democrats at the presidential level.
