This is one of those very rare occasions when I have to disagree with Dr. Sowell. Financial interests are but one thing that motivates people. (Jonah Goldberg's piece in National Review today is an interesting contrast to Dr. Sowell here.) The nature of the job will always draw those least fit to hold office. If you want to improve the situation, you need to change the attitudes of the people doing the hiring (i.e., the US Electorate). We the people have to get more serious about who we consider fit for office, and that is a massively uphill battle. The current unserious popularity contest it has become is a symptom of that rot within the electorate. I have no idea how to go about reversing this slide, or if it's even possible at this point, but I'm pretty dang sure throwing money at them is NOT the way.

I've yet to meet anyone who claims the mantle of Anarchist who actually wants anarchy. They've all been dedicated leftists who believe in bringing about their idea of socialist utopia by any means necessary. Spend some time with them and you'll realize pretty quickly they are the champions of massive government. Like all American leftists, the crushing boot heel of Leviathan is meant for you, not them.
There, there, Robert. Just lay back, close your eyes and dream of the Motherland, it will all be over soon...
