I was changing channels when I caught the last scene of a movie I had never heard of: 1941's "Million Dollar Baby". Basic plot, an old woman gives a young woman a million dollars. The young woman and her friends soon realize they'd rather earn their money than get it as a gift. This is the popular culture the "Greatest Generation" grew up on. That song was written about a combination of John Lennon’s mother and his budding relationship with Yoko Ono. This week, with the advent of a mythical “Julia,” the Obama campaign has given that line new meaning. So much of what the campaign says is meaningless, but it is said just to fool voters. And sadly, this sort of propaganda works on an alarming number of Americans. (Sandra Fluke, anyone?)
