Meanwhile, accusing William Buckley of racism is just the reflexive reaction of the Left to anybody who does not join them in Denouncing the Demon Du Jour. Buckley founded the National Review at a time when, in his mind, the defining conflict of the day was communism versus Christianity, which was represented by the West. Race was simply a non-issue to him. He opposed governmental intrusion into matters of civil liberty, but not civil rights. He wrote: "We frown on any effort of the Negroes to attain social equality by bending the instrument of the state to their purposes... But we applaud the efforts to define their rights by the lawful and non-violent use of social and economic sanctions which they choose freely to exert..."
