Union Teacher: John Ransom is an Idiot

The public advocacy pursued by Horace Mann, considered the father of the American public school system, should sound familiar to us all: by pointing out that some 10% of the lowest-income Americans were not educated, he advocated central, public education for 100% of American children. It made no sense then, and it makes no sense now. What happened to American education is what will happen to American health care: in the old system, the middle class could get top-notch education but the poorest were lacking. Then the government took everything over. After a while, the middle class were educated more poorly than the poorest had been educated, and only the very wealthiest could afford what used to be available to the middle class.
