I kind of agree with you, but you forget private enterprise also invests in itself...the ones that do not usually fail or get bailed out like the auto companies......the govt. needs to find a balance of investment and cuts...right now they are just fighting, blindly cutting and blindly increasing taxes......

"education (even though not done correctly) needs to be standardized, everyone needs to have a minimum level of education"

Eliminate the Dept of Education. The FEDERAL gov't should stay out of education. That is best handled by the states. The Federal gov't should cut spending and reduce taxes. This would leave more money in our pockets to fund education initiatives at state and local level......where it is most effective.

The MAXIMUM amount government should be spending is that amount needed to fulfill its CONSTITUTIONAL duties, and no more. Last I checked, the federal government had no Constitutional role to play in education, for example.

Thanks for reading my mind, btw.

The gov't is not blindly cutting. They are making sure that if any cuts happen they will affect seniors, and others that will raise a huge outcry. Theya re making very calculated cuts. Meanwhile they are lying about the effects of their cuts. Witness Janet Nepolitano's comments about the airports having huge lines this last weekend. The airports themselves stated that they had no lines.

you are just against everything...you are exactly what I am talking about when I say blindly doing things.......govt. invests in the country itself, schools, roads, servcies....right now we probably agree its over spending, but there is a minimum amount which should be done by the govt....education (even though not done correctly) needs to be standardized, everyone needs to have a minimum level of education no matter what their background...that is something govt. can do, and that is called an investment....

No, private enterprise invests in itself, while the government "invests" OUR tax dollars.

We've been hearing for days now about the major damage $85 billion in sequester cuts will do to the country however, during an Oversight and Government Reform hearing on Capitol Hill Tuesday, representatives from the Education and Transportation Departments were clueless as to how much money has been spent on department conferences.

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan asked Education Department Deputy Secretary Anthony Miller and Transportation Department Deputy Secretary John Porcari how much money has been spent on travel, conferences and consultants. Jordan was told the departments do not think additional savings can be found when it comes to conference...
