The Republicans should pass a budget, then adjourn. It should be based on the Presidents balanced approach (hah), raise rates on the $250K+, and cut 2.5X that amount of spending (Obama campaigned on this) as they see fit, preferably with simple % by department. Let department heads budget for them selves off a smaller number like the rest of us have had to do over the last 4 years! When Obama screams bloody murder, just step up to the mike and say we passed what he campaigned on, if he doesn't sign it, he was lying to everyone. Merry Christmas!

But I think another element aside from a "constructive alternative" is missing from the Hill Republicans' psyches (and thus playbooks).

That is the realization that, whether or not Obama blames the GOP in the short term for taking us over the cliff, in the end, he's the President.  He's the one who's supposed to be representing all of us -- yes, even the evil rich and those who didn't vote for him.  If he doesn't negotiate seriously about the cliff and we...
