Or, here's a thought: Pay the meat inspectors and air traffic controllers a salary and benfets commensurate with the private sector, and if the worker is less competent fire him or her and hire someone more competent. I'm sure there are lots of qualified people who would be willing to do those jobs.

When I first read this story in the Washington Post about supposedly under-appreciated federal bureaucrats, I was tempted to focus on the sentence referring to “the sledgehammer of budget cuts scheduled to hit today.”
