I usually enjoy Tom's contributions. However, on this occasion it is pollemical rather than analytical. It is silly to say that the US medical system does not ration. There are about 60 million people with no insurance. It is silly to say that it is not socialised, when the insurance that paid for the procedure was heavily subsidised by the government - a subsidy the poor and uninsured to not enjoy. It is silly to suggest that ensuring everyone has private insurance is socialisation. There are highly effective systems around the World that are mixed systems. Nobody has got it right. However, pushing all the rationing on the poorest of the community and giving all the subsidies to the rich I find offensive.
