No one wants to do the study that matters: It's time we answered the question, "Is there anything anyone can do for children in the worst situations?" Take a sampling of 5 year old kids who are younger siblings of the worst students with the worst parents in worst schools from the worst neighborhoods and have a wealthy benefactor pay to send them to the best academically rigorous and socially positive private schools for K-12. Pay for private tutors to help after school if needed. What will we learn?

This oft-quoted line from the then-governor of Massachusetts might be updated to include "the public interest," as well as public safety.

There are few matters of public interest greater than educating the next generation. Chicago public school teachers who went on strike Monday have struck against the public interest, placing self-interest in difficult economic times ahead of children.
