He refused to attack it because he lacked standing. He was guilty of implementing a similar plan in the state he governed. There was no amount of "good at the state level, horrible at the federal level" backpedaling that was going to allow him to get away with trash talking Obamacare. He had to avoid it, because it would have ruined him. That is one of the primary reasons Romney was a loser candidate from the word go. The GOP needs to pick their two or three possible candidates now and start grooming them for 2016. Pick solid, principled newcomers and slowly and methodically start introducing them to the nation. Start now and stay consistent. And, for crying out loud, stick to the economy and freedom!

These are days of hindsight and second-guessing for Republicans, which is human nature after a trauma like this election loss.

There are million “why” theories out there, from the Hurricane Sandy effect to pernicious media bias. Wringing our hands over those factors gets us nowhere.

We can’t stop hurricanes, and media bias is always there. Reagan and Bush 43 won twice against waves of poisonous bias, so that is not an insurmountable obstacle.

What Republicans need is a slate of candidates that can energize the base while expanding the appeal of a conservative message.
