The Message Romney Missed

Romney's campaign was run by people that don't truly understand what it takes. Republican politics isn't really that hard: 1) When you retaliate, escalate! If he calls you a cattle rustler, respond "that's a lie, but what do you expect from a horse thief!" 2) Ignore the media. 3) Make strengths out of your weaknesses. "I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience" -- Reagan's answer to critics about his age. 4) Make weaknesses out your opponent's strengths. (Swift boat) 5) Genuinely believe in smaller government on moral grounds and you will connect with the middle class.

In one way or another, Romney failed on 1 - 5. The only one that he gets a somewhat passing grade is #5, when he started emphasizing the seriousness of our crushing debt. Even so, it came across as more calculated than sincere.

As Bret pointed out, Romney failed on many occasions. He never should've cowtowed to Crowley so quickly re: Libya. He never approached the social issues that were being thrown all over the place. Yes. It was the "economy", but when Obama's "team" was scurrying 1960's issues, Romney (and all Republicans) failed to recognize them. It was about social issues.

Maybe it was Romney's choice to not go for the juggler, and maybe it was the Republican leadership. Who knows? We do know, though, that Romney had no problem chewing up and spitting out his own. That's what Republicans do best.

The post mortems on the presidential campaign continue to pour in, the ones on the botched Romney effort the more interesting (and more depressing for those of us who supported him). President Obama was clearly vulnerable, and Mitt Romney clearly positioned to defeat him.

So what went wrong? Let me add my analysis. Three words: Message. Messenger. Messaging.

The messenger was flawed, unwilling to take risks, unprepared for the Obama political wrecking machine, left dazed and confused Election Night.

If inept messaging could be deemed a felony, this campaign was a crime against humanity. I've never seen...
