That was then this is now. The world is a different place. It was a fifties morals where married couples on TV sleep in twin beds and we hid under our desks to protect us against the Atom bomb. As a young news photographer I had a chance to speak with Sandy during the 1964 Democratic convention. Of course he knew what was going on but to reveal it, assuming someone would have broadcast it, would of meant the end of his White House access and maybe his job. That ended when Ben Bradlee gave the OK to reveal Watergate and our political innocents started to end. The internet and all type of alternative media have made a difference and I'm not sure all of it is for the best.

Ignorance is bliss?

When Walter Cronkite, a.k.a. The Most Trusted Man in the World, convinced Americans that we had lost every battle in Vietnam and had lost the war, it was a heavy blow to us. (John Kerry's tales of American soldiers' masochism toward Vietnamese P.O.W.s added fuel to the fire, of course.) A pall hung over America, only cured by the sunny Ronald Reagan (yes, Morning in America)--if he had done nothing else but gotten us to hold up our heads in pride again, he'd still be my hero.

There's a whole lot of ugly goin' on out there, but I'm glad we learn about so much of it. For better or for worse.

“I said we’d refocus on the people who actually attacked us on 9/11—and today, al-Qaeda is on the run and Osama bin Laden is dead.” (U.S. President Barack Obama, October 11, 2012.)

“Let’s be clear, these protests (in Benghazi) were in reaction to a video that had spread around the region. We have no information to suggest that it was a preplanned attack.” (White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, September 14, 2012)

Let’s fast-reverse almost exactly fifty years:
