Be careful about propagating that tale about Cain and Abel. A lot of people in this country consider that story a fairy tale from a book of fairy tales. Maybe that's a big part of the problem we have with these mass murders. We've lost our moral compass with nowhere to turn to regain it. Religious symbols, books and gatherings are treated as aberrations in our new secular society. Civility takes the place of morality though it is no substitute.

On Friday, in his moving and heartfelt statement in response to the horrific shooting in Newtown, Conn., President Obama said, "As a country, we have been through this too many times. ... And we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."
