Affirmative action was intended to give everyone an even break. No favoritism regardless of race or gender. Instead, it was corrupted so minorities and women got special treatment. Instead of the best qualified person for the job, a certain number of minorities had to be hired so better qualified people wouldn't be hired. It also hurt minorities. I knew one business owner who said that was required to hire a certain number of minorities and that was ALL he'd hire. He didn't care if they were better qualified that a minority, the rest of the people he'd hire would be white. It wasn't racism. It was a matter of principle.

President Obama just wrapped up his first press conference since being re-elected for a second term last week and the first he’s given since August.  He opened with remarks about the economy as the fiscal cliff looms, but addressed a variety of topics.

“There’s only one way to solve these challenges and that is to do it together,” Obama said. “We’ve got to work out our differences.”
