You might even recall our scandal embroiled Prime Minister has made it onto your news twice now with her speeches - the first being her plagirised, tearful speech to Congress, the second being her lashing of the opposition leader. Obama was told to pay attention, that's how you do it by news sources in the US (given that her 'Sexism Speech' was lies and slander maybe that was useful advice for him). So we're on the security council and our first chance to 'influence and shape' global policy, and we go in and abstain. The fence is such a comfortable seat.
Palestine is not recognized as a state at the United Nations. All that could change this week as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas attempts to upgrade its status to "observer state" - implicitly recognizing Palestine as an independent nation.

As Reuters reports, this upgrade could present a whole host of new issues, especially with regard to its relationship with Israel and the general anti-Israel sentiment that runs deep through the international organization.
