The Van Jones Matter

My gosh, what happens to "conservatives" when they get old? Do they ALL become simpering weenies, who seem obsessed with being invited to the "right" parties (i.e., the "lefty" parties)?

No. Pat Buchannan became a loon!

Being a kook "truther" doesn't matter? Being a Marxist doesn't matter? What DOES matter to you, anymore; the perfect martini? Get a pair, buddy, or take a hike!

A Loss of Will on Afghanistan

Gregory254 Wrote: Sep 04, 2009 5:02 PM
It is getting ridiculous that thoughtful conservatives continue to back the bloodletting that we are allowing in Afghanistan.

They continue to trot out people who suggest that if we would just do this or that, it MIGHT actually work our years from now, and many American soldier's lives from now. But, what they never try to do is tell us just how it is that clearing out that unclearable swamp is any of our continued concern... at least from a constitutional perspective.

"Oh, we'll be much safer, because alQaeda won't have a safe haven anymore." Yes they will; just as they have for the last 8 years. They just cross the border into Cambodia... oh, I mean Pakistan... where we can't get at them. This is a huge waste of money,...

Time to Leave Iraq

Let's leave Iraq before we get dragged into another round of their violence. The longer we stay, the higher will be the likelihood of that happening.

I agreed with going in there to get Saddam and the WMD. But, I've re-thought my support for punitive expeditions (virtually our entire use of the military in the last 20 years).

The U.S. should stop and realize that we aren't accomplishing anything by trying to solve every problem in the world.

Let's get our own constitutional house back in order, before we turn around and find that - while we've been exporting democracy abroad -we've become a People's Socialist Utopia at home!

Common Sense, please!

George Will Is Right

I wish that Americans would realize that the days when it was our resposibility to keep the rest of the world from tearing itself apart are over.

During World Wars I and II, we had to serve as the "arsenal of democracy". During the Cold War, we had to contain communism. After 9/11, we needed to respond to it with attacks on the state that harbored, and still sponsored alQaeda.

But, we sould never have undertaken a nation-building excercise. David is right. These tribal warlords want as much to do with democracy and individual liberty as we want to do with sharia law.

It would have served us better to have sent in Special Forces to take out bin Laden and the Taliban leaders right off the bat. Then, we could have put...

In Afghanistan, Knowing When to Stop

Gregory254 Wrote: Sep 01, 2009 4:49 PM
Most of the posts here talk about sticking it out, staying the course... yada, yada. But, the situation has changed. The people running the war do not believe in it. They are operating from the idea that it will LOOK stronger to more Americans to stay in the "easy" war, and slowly bail out of the one Bush won. So, why should we conservatives continue to back this half-hearted political gimmick that will put even more of our troops in harm's way? I don't intend to. And, I also don't think we can "win" it, either. That chance is past.

We SHOULD HAVE installed a strong man government 8 years ago, that we could have worked with, and pulled our troops out within 2 years. Or, we should have simply sent SF troops in there and killed the...

Judgment vs. Judgmentalism

Cal,
I don't doubt that you knew Kennedy. And I don't doubt that there were things to personally like about him. And, I agree that we cannot judge his eternal destiny. That is between him and our Lord Jesus. But, when you say that calling out bad behavior is being judgmental, you are being both naive and unbiblical. Jesus often judged hypocrites, and pharisees... and his own disciples for their continual lack of faith. When Jesus said not to judge people, he meant that you should not do the same things they do, and then judge them. Please READ Matthew 7!

To say that Kennedy was a hyper-partisan liberal - and not at all publicly gracious towards conservatives - is not judgemental invective. It's simply observation. Please be...

Did Hitler Want War?

Gregory254 Wrote: Sep 01, 2009 3:19 PM
Of course Hitler wanted war. He just didn't want it before 1942. His generals told him to wait. But, Hitler thought he could get Danzig - and Poland, as well - on the cheap.

That's why he signed the Non-aggression Pact with the Soviets, only a week previously. To be able to attack Poland and have the Brits and French realize that Poland wouldn't get help from Stali before Hitler had swallowed it whole.
This was to make them back down - as they always had before.

Someonw posted that you might want to read about WWII before taking such a ridiculous a-historical tack. I agree! Start with reading Mein Kampf. Hitler laid it out in detail almost 20 years before. This foolish diatribe doesn't help keep credibility with...

Hey Medved!

McCain lost support ONLY when the economy tanked. That took all the oxygen out of the room. The attacks on Ayers, etc. got no traction because people wanted "change" because of the economy. Just check the RCP polling avg. McCain led between the Republican Convention and he middle of September, when the economy tanked. There is NO OTHER REASON! Our party doesn't need to become mealy-mouthed moderates to win elections. We need to actuall STAND for conservative principles once we get in office. Winningelections will be no problem if we do that!
We seem only to have 2 views of this country's foreign policy. And, both have us mired in the midst of people we don't like.

1. We cowtow to tin-pot dictators over issues we falsly consider important to our national security.
or,

2. We go to war with said tin-pot dictators over issues we falsly consider important to our national security.

The Unites States is not (should not be) the world's policeman. This "strategy" - admittedly formerly necessary - uses up our blood and treasure, allowing the socialist regimes throughout Europe and Asia to just call Washington whenever they have a problem. And, that makes it our problem, not theirs. This adventure in global police-keeping has got to end. Or, we will soon be...
