It is getting ridiculous that thoughtful conservatives continue to back the bloodletting that we are allowing in Afghanistan.

They continue to trot out people who suggest that if we would just do this or that, it MIGHT actually work our years from now, and many American soldier's lives from now. But, what they never try to do is tell us just how it is that clearing out that unclearable swamp is any of our continued concern... at least from a constitutional perspective.

"Oh, we'll be much safer, because alQaeda won't have a safe haven anymore." Yes they will; just as they have for the last 8 years. They just cross the border into Cambodia... oh, I mean Pakistan... where we can't get at them. This is a huge waste of money,...

Let's leave Iraq before we get dragged into another round of their violence. The longer we stay, the higher will be the likelihood of that happening.

I agreed with going in there to get Saddam and the WMD. But, I've re-thought my support for punitive expeditions (virtually our entire use of the military in the last 20 years).

The U.S. should stop and realize that we aren't accomplishing anything by trying to solve every problem in the world.

Let's get our own constitutional house back in order, before we turn around and find that - while we've been exporting democracy abroad -we've become a People's Socialist Utopia at home!

I wish that Americans would realize that the days when it was our resposibility to keep the rest of the world from tearing itself apart are over.

During World Wars I and II, we had to serve as the "arsenal of democracy". During the Cold War, we had to contain communism. After 9/11, we needed to respond to it with attacks on the state that harbored, and still sponsored alQaeda.

But, we sould never have undertaken a nation-building excercise. David is right. These tribal warlords want as much to do with democracy and individual liberty as we want to do with sharia law.

Most of the posts here talk about sticking it out, staying the course... yada, yada. But, the situation has changed. The people running the war do not believe in it. They are operating from the idea that it will LOOK stronger to more Americans to stay in the "easy" war, and slowly bail out of the one Bush won. So, why should we conservatives continue to back this half-hearted political gimmick that will put even more of our troops in harm's way? I don't intend to. I don't doubt that you knew Kennedy. And I don't doubt that there were things to personally like about him. And, I agree that we cannot judge his eternal destiny. That is between him and our Lord Jesus. But, when you say that calling out bad behavior is being judgmental, you are being both naive and unbiblical. McCain lost support ONLY when the economy tanked. That took all the oxygen out of the room. The attacks on Ayers, etc. got no traction because people wanted "change" because of the economy. Just check the RCP polling avg. McCain led between the Republican Convention and he middle of September, when the economy tanked. There is NO OTHER REASON! Our party doesn't need to become mealy-mouthed moderates to win elections. We need to actuall STAND for conservative principles once we get in office. Winningelections will be no problem if we do that!
