The concept that this semantic gives birth to is that it isn't yours to start with and you are returning it to its rightful place. The concepts that would naturally give consequence to this are that giving is zero-sum, that there is a fund of goods and they are to be passed around to each in turn, and that there is no such thing as charity--that no one actually gives that which is truly his, because it doesn't really belong to him in the first place. If you are not a communist or a socialist this is a truly destructive conception of the world, and I think this is why it has had such great success. No one thinks about it, they simply parrot it.
