are probably better places to start reform, rather than by direct attacks on the unions. With competion and smaller schools (N.B. NOT smaller class size) the situation gets more manageable for parents, and the systems become more answerable. If the situation becomes more community-oriented, the teachers themselves might want to do away with the voices that claim to speak for them, rather than share their paychecks with those whose main purpose in life is to alienate the teacher from their real employers, the parents.

Global Warming and the Sun

is a liar. I went to school in the 70's and even did an oral report on the greenhouse effect for one of my biology classes (I then went on to double major in biol-chem in college, taking 49 undergrad hours of biology). The idea of global warming as a threat to well-being never took off untill just recently, and I think the reason was simply one of political expediency. The population and pollution and nuclear energy bogey-men were losing their ability to hold the attention of the public and drive policy decisions the way the left wing establishment desired. The tactic of the left when things cease to go their way is to change the subject. This will happen again in a couple of years.

Republics do not survive and thrive simply because they are republics. History is replete with failures of our kind of government. The issue Medved raises is very pertinent to our time because of the level of mistrust the public has for large corporations, and because it is obvious that without the existence of certain of these in our history we were able to better survive particular onslaughts that might otherwise have been critical injuries. The key thing for conservatives to address is the...

something that marginally improves your quality of life costs a dollar. The govt decides that it's worth so much that they will help pay for it. Say they kick in a dollar. The people who sold it to you before the govt intervention knew that you were willing to pay a dollar for it and are guaranteed that much already due to the intervention. they kick the price up to a dollar and a half. Then the govt decides that this thing is so valuable that they will kick in another......You get it.
