The Pope and Godless Capitalism

Sure, Pat, we need higher tariffs - - because consumers want to pay $20 for a shirt instead of $100. Consumers pay tariffs, Pat. Tell the Pope to talk to consumers . . . we are the real “greedy capitalists.”

You clearly don't understand how tariffs work.

If it costs $20 to make a shirt here, and it costs 5 cents to make it in Bangladesh, then the tariff would be $19.95 cents.

You STILL pay $20 for the shirt, regardless of WHERE it is made.
The $19.95 goes to the government, and YOU DON'T PAY ANY INCOME TAX!!!!!!!!

You son't seem to know anything about capitalism. Companies want to make a thing called a "profit". If the tariff is $19.95, the company has to raise the price to the consumers to make a profit.

And if you think the tariff would replace the income tax, you're just barmy.

I know a lot about capitalism, economics, business management, marketing, etc, but clearly you don't. Nor do you know about history.

The income tax replaced TARIFFS!
reversing that would simply be going back to the original design in our Constitution.

If we increase the tariff, the government will STILL keep the income tax. The only way to get rid of that pernicious tax is to amend the Constitution to forbid it. And that's not likely to happen any time soon.

You ARE barmy. The tariff will not replace the income tax. Congress is not going to do that.

My lord, I've rarely encountered someone as obtuse as you on this site.

Again, you don't appear to know your HISTORY, as in, what WAS the law before it was changed!!!

The Income tax WAS specifically FORBIDDEN in the Constitution!!
Pat is saying that CHANGING THAT in order to do away with tariffs is where America went wrong, and I believe he is absolutely right.

What he is advocating is a RETURN to the original Constitutional principles.

What I am saying is that your idea is pure pie-in-the-sky. It isn't going to happen. The Congress LOVES the income tax. It is not going to get rid of the income tax unless there is a Constitutional amendment to prohibit it. And there isn't going to be any such Constitutional Amendment.
