Actually it was not Heller, but a SCOTUS decision in the case U.S. v. Miller ( 1934) ""In the absence of any evidence tending to show that possession or use of a 'shotgun having a barrel of less than eighteen inches in length' at this time has some reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia, we cannot say that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear such an instrument." The AR-15 is the civilian antecedent to the standard issue military rifle of the United States, hence it is protected.
Henry you are entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. The peak of homicides came in 1991 with 24,700 homicides. Since that time the Homicide rate has fallen roughly 50% while at the same time the number of guns in circulation in the US has nearly doubled. If there was any correlation between the availability of guns and crime, we should have seen the murder rate, and other violent crime rates go up, even marginally, but such is not the case. Record number of new gun owners, record numbers of citizens getting CCW permits, record lows in every category of violent crime....is any of this getting through.
