The Electoral College, Under Attack

In all due respect, let's be clear on what the founding fathers wrote: http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/provisions.html 1. The election process is corrupted; 2. Those in office continue to corrupt and abuse their power; 3. The Dept. of Education and the IRS are two prime examples of a system endowed by decades of mischief, misappropriation of funds & 4. Our nation was "established" to escape unfair taxation &no representation. Your argument is status-quo and fails to address the issues with the "process" from nominating, vetting to the polling. I think those that are disheartened don't want to read another article about being faithful to the Constitution but discuss real solutions to our process.

You're quite right. And I think what gets lost in the shuffle here is that the Electoral College was supposed to work with electors sent by State legislators. This was designed quite specifically to give States another check on Federal power. Sadly, by forcing states to use ballots instead (Amendment XIV Section 2), this check was removed, and with it the true purpose of the College. Now we already have a "democratic" way to select the President/VP, but one which unfairly an systematically disenfranchises voters in certain categories from certain states, all without the Republican benefit of a check on Federal power.

You and I must be reading different texts of the 14th Amendment. I see no section of the Amendment that uses the term "ballot". Are you confusing this with the XII Amendment (which has only one section) which does use the term "ballot" (for different purposes than you allude to)?

As Tuesday’s election ticks ever nearer, my fervent wish is a solid electoral college win for Mitt Romney. Not to get greedy, but I’d like it in the bag before the wee hours of Wednesday morning.

I hope this is not asking too much. October’s poll swing and a broadening visceral sense tell me this election may not feature the nail-biting closeness we have been told to expect for months.

But if we are to be ensnared by a down-to-the-wire finish, get ready for the attendant micro-focus on the Electoral College, and the resulting debate over whether it should...
