The argument from prudence has its place in the tax debates. The question whether a tax increase or a certain level or form of taxes will help or harm most people is a legitimate question. But it is a debate that distracts from the fundamental moral and constitutional argument. So the pertinent question is: At what percentage of personal income forcibly taken in taxes does a person cease to be a free citizen and become nothing but a tax slave in violation of the XIIIth Amendment ?
