About the only things most media types know anything about are sports and celebrities. The average news reporters knowledge of economics on a scale of one to ten is about a negative 50. Same goes for thei knowledge of science, history, law, etc. As I found out when I tried to get a journalism job out of college back in the 70s, the most important qualification for a male reporter after his journalism/English degree (from Columbia) is having played football in high school. If you have knowledge in a substantive area, you don't get hired. You just scare the owner or editor. Of course is goes without saying that our non-partisan media only hire liberal Democrats. If you are a Republican you are lucky you ONLY don't get hired.

gmallast, my friend, you left out one very important thing in your assertion: ADVERTISING. I'm sure that you have noticed lately that the ads on the Internet have gone up exponentially ever since TV, radio, and especially the mighty newspaper have almost gone the way of the dinosaur. It's "what sells today". The reporter who can by their delivery drag in a few more customers for the advertisers is the one who is seen the most.
I'll admit, there ain't much to look at, or listen to, on TV today.
My son, when he was in Pharmacy school, complained that they made him take a marketing course. I asked him what he thought of marketing. His response: Marketing sucks, big time. Aha!

He just told it like it was.

What a difference a few month makes.

Last month we were told by a fawning news media how great things were. The economy was a little engine that could.  And the declining unemployment rate was touted in headlines as significant progress toward economic recovery.

Unemployment rate falls to 7.8% in September, reported the Washington Post- a four-year low...”nearly”… whatever “nearly” means.

“The nation’s jobless rate dropped to its lowest point in nearly four years in September. And unlike some recent declines, this one happened for the right reason: not because people gave up looking for a job, but...
