Tree11: Excellent point!
Matt in N.C. Well said!
I have taught social studies for twelve years and on several occasions filled in for computer lab. Trust me, the kids are not using the computers for educational research...unless checking FaceBook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, etc. count as educational. As soon as they become aware of supervision, they quickly click onto what they were supposed to be doing...and then revert to whatever they were doing as soon as they are unsupervised. Although it is important for students to know how to use technology, the techno-fetish that has captured the imaginations of educrats is beyond damaging to an already intellectually vulnerable generation. Read Mark Bauerlein's The Dumbest Generation for numerous studies documenting the relationship between technology and the loss of thinking.
