Jeff2422: The author of Star Trek must have been very naive. How were goods and services to be rationed, without money? And in the later series, the only creatures motivated by profit were ugly little men called Ferengi. The were depicted are repellent and greedy. It rather reminds me of the way hitler depicted the Jews- as mercantile, greedy and physically ugly.

Yes, they were. The main idea in Star Trek was that all basic needs were met because of the replicators. Anything from food to most consumer goods could be produced by pushing a few buttons or speaking an order to the computer and there was your free stuff. This completely ignores the need to build the replicators, procure and transport raw materials for them and the massive power supply needed to make them work as described in Star Trek.

Then there is the idea that people will exercise their full potential. One would think that if all one needed to excel was unlimited free stuff that the millions on welfare should be a bunch of Da Vincis and Shakespeares, cranking out out and inventions on a daily basis amongst the lot of them. That isn't happening. If everything were free, a very large percentage of the people would just coast. Consider also that there was no material gain for hard work, so that would eliminate more people from working.

But then the no money system only seemed to really affect Star Fleet and the elite. You almost never see Average Joes or poor people in Star Trek. One occasionally saw a small merchant hauling goods for sale which means there must still be some kind of profit going on. And since we've never seen how the majority of people live, it could be pretty bad outside of Star Fleet patrolled areas.
Given what we know in 2012, saying that capitalism will make a society richer than socialism should be about as controversial as saying the earth is round, not flat. Yet, a recent Gallup poll shows that more liberals have a positive view of socialism than capitalism. This is only possible because there are so many perverse incentives that drive the promotion of socialism. If you're a politician, socialism puts power in your hands while capitalism takes it away. If you want to use the government to control people's lives, socialism is a wonderful vehicle to do just that while...
