Michelle--I truly appreciate your fact-finding and your ability to bracket and understand the backing that so many of these seemingly harmless entities seem to be receiving from people who want to revelutionize the way things work in this country. What staggers me is the seeming impotence of our U.S. Supreme Court not to have acted on the unbridled attacks on free speech presented by legislators everywhere pushing an idealogical agenda. That a Federal entity such as the FCC should be allowed to interfere with personal freedom of speech and content issues is mind-boggling (local communities should be able to stop pornographic-like content including that related to speech). The FCC should only govern the interstate aspects relative to...

Self-Governance Works

Our founders gave us a perfectly thought out program called the Constitution. They put in safeguards to protect individual liberty and propriety. There were certain rights that accrued to the Federal Government and others were delegated to the states. Within the states individually were assigned similar delegations. Of all the rights granted, the most important were the rights spelled out in the Bill of Rights amendment. Technology has presented new issues such as those described by pb (he does not include global threats Nuclear, Terrorism, international trade, Military Defense etc). What is most important is that the Federal and State Government no longer operates within the boundaries that have provided us individually with the...
Mike--I scored your op-ed as a three as opposed to my usual five (highest). I agree with your thought about the reasons why third party candidates don't work when a proper party candidate has been selected in a valid primary. I endorse your opinion about Daggett and also your rationale regarding Christie. But your presentation was too confusing. I recommend reading a Dr. Thomas Sowell Op-Ed for a simple presentation offering clear and concise reasoning. Geoff

Degeneration of Democracy

Illinois is a perfect example of your thesis. Where it all began, I have no idea. The ntire community is controlled by generations of people in the 'body politic' who go along with the block leader. They have come to accept block voting based on direction from nieghborhood leaders or controllers of patonage. More than fiftty percent of the people are employed in positions that are in government, education, or related thereto. They vote for the status quo because that is in their selfish interest, not because it is the right thing to do. It would appear that the sickness is prevalent in a growing number of states. Where will it end?

In the Wilsonian Tradition

Wilson fell into the same error as Plato's Philosopher King in The Republic. God has a plan and that is perfect. Man is not perfect even if he is a King. I wonder what this says about Obama. John Milton wrote a great poem about over-reaching Pride "Paradise Lost". The last is an apt answer to my 'wonder'. Geoff
What has been most interesting about the "Holder Appointees" case is the absence of objection on the basis of perceived bias as a result of previous employment. The perception of impropriety is never specifically alluded to. Yet our Justices are subject to recusal (self-imposed)in situations that would possibly smack of self-interest. Noone can argue that this is not the case with pre-existent litigation wherein the attorney was the principal. Your Atticus Finch allusion (metaphor)is too indirect. I do understand your need to ridicule but in this case, there is an absolute need to call a 'spade a spade'. Geoff
The idea that Gates email blasted his accusations of racist treatment by the police after the event was news to me. Why hasn't more been made of this point? It is truly significant of intent to defame and actionable. Where's the officer's legal counsel? You have listed an interesting list of culprits. Thank you again Ann Coulter for making my day!

Disaster in the Making?

Mr. Sowell--I have occsionally seen you on TV and read your column as religiously as Ann Coulter's. I read yours for the gravity of your opinion and hers for the humor and the insight that you both share.

I too have been struck by the President's relative ignorance about how things actually work in a capitalist society and his inability to understand the economic consequences of his poverty-based approach to resolving minoruity issues and his unbalanced approach to the established majority. Coupling his narrowow lensed economic program with his apparent lack of scholarship with respect to constitutional law, our history and heritage, we indeed are on a path to near-term disaster. Perhaps, someone in Congress reads your...
Re Michael Medved's Lemonade Stand and the importance of business in building relationships.

Mike--A valient and excellent effort. When we expect the average person to read and follow a thought along its logical path to conclusion, requires a patient and intelligence that many of us don't have. I almost fell into that categorry. Patience came to my rescue! And I am glad that it did. Thank you for your positive view of business and its importance to our way of life. Geoff Flagstad,
Awkward as a word used by Maureen Dowd is as far out for her when speaking about Obama as we can ever expect from this man-hater of the Eastern set of the extreme Left. There was never a conservative she could not find to mutilate throgh innuendo and distortion. Forgiveness has never been here best suit but it would appear for once she has been confused by her leader and a crack has appeared in her emotional armor. But the proper word for the subject is "disgusting". Where did the idiot Obama come from? Hell I expect--for that is where the Father of Lies resides. Geoff
