Just because something is legal does not make it moral. We are called to be moral, not just to obey the laws.

Of course I would work at a congenial job for which I am qualified if I were able to do so. However, I think that the government-provided social safety net should be a lot bigger and with a lot fewer holes. I am relatively fortunate, but I do not have enough in my SSI payment for Section 8 housing, even if I were to get on the years-long waiting list: I must live with my longsuffering mother instead. Private charity is very good, but it is charity and has all the advantages and disadvantages of charity. I believe that things like SSI, Medicaid, Section 8 housing, etc. should be seen as entitlements that one automatically receives if one is qualified to receive them, not as charity to bide one through hard times.

When you state that progressives are all about elitism, do you refer to progressive leaders or more ordinary people who hold progressive opinions? I am not closely acquainted with any progressive elites. My father (a retired sheet metal worker) and mother (a teacher's aide) are socially conservative and fiscally liberal, and I took most of my political opinions from them.

I agree with you 100% about the importance of social conservatism for rebuilding the society of the US and the world. But fiscal conservatism seems, at least in my admittedly biased opinion, to lack compassion towards those who do not have a lot of money or are not able to earn very much :-)

I am a social conservative (I fervently oppose abortion, since I am a practicing Catholic) and a fiscal liberal (especially since I am on SSI and Medicaid). Mr. Prager, I would think there are other people like me. Please do not generalize.
