"assault weapon" is a MADE UP term,"assault RIFLE" describes a select-fire or full auto rifle firing a LOWER powered cartridge than the usual hunting rifle.
Your "scoped sniper rifle" is just a regular hunting rifle,perhaps accurized with selected parts.
Curiously,the 94 Assault Weapon Ban prohibited the TEC-9 pistol only because it LOOKED bad,it had the same functioning and capabilities as the usual Glock 9mm pistol used by police.
