A Carter Deja Vu?

This is just ignorance Chuck. The uprising you mention was a nearly three decade long response to earlier interventions in Iran by the US. The CIA installed the Shah, overthrowing an elected government in 1953. Then they spent the years in between acting as the Shah's version of Uday Hussein. Not at all surprising. Actually, I'm surprised they waited as long as they did. Iranians have put up with a lot of completely illegal meddling and worse from the US governmemt. Why can't we leave Iran to the Iranians? Joe Sixpack on the street in Des Moines wouldn't be happy to hear that the Iran government intervened to get the Obamanable elected here. He'd rightly think that US "elections" (however flawed and influenced) should be left...

Democracy Without Elections

As others have noted, the 17th Amendment is the culprit here, not the salvation. The Senate was intended to owe allegiance to the states, rather than the money influence of popular elections. As it stands now, senators only differ from congressmen by length of term. The total repeal of the 17th would restore some balance that we've lost.
