On the subject of derogatory words and their repression to spare "feelings": The terms "idiot, "imbecile" and "moron" were originally clinical terms for mental incapacity. These roughly corresponded to IQ ranges of 0 to 30, 30 to 50 and 50 to 70. Touchy-feely types decided that these terms were too pejorative to be used by professionals. The non-specific term of "retarded" was substituted. The only problem is that the individuals to whom this new term was applied were not "retarded" (meaning late) but fundamentally defective. Over the years, several more generations of cloying, but meaningless words were then invoked to avoid stigmatizing the "defective" individual. Result: Loss of effective communication.

There’s an epidemic in this country, something that has or will affect all of us in our lives. And the government needs to act to protect us from those who may do us harm. This plague is particularly felt in schools. The children must be made safe.

President Obama, bravely speaking out against this horror, said, “We have an obligation to ensure that our schools are safe for all our kids.” Amen, Mr. President. Amen.
