Mother of 4 was spot on. So were a couple of others. One specific was the doggy door if your situation allows.

I would suggest you look at at either retrofitting a fireplace insert or a wood burning stove.

This way much more of the heat goes into the house than up the chimney.

Also, you can heat your water etc on the wood burning stove.

Purchase a propane fueled 2 or 3 burner camp stove.
Purchase one or two propane powered lanterns.
Purchase and keep full 2 or 3 10 pound propane tanks (the kind that you normally see hooked up to grills).

Purchase and rotate enough water to cook with, drink, do occasional potty flushes, and spit baths with for 1 week. Just in case.
