In response to:

Why Don Opposes Capital Rape

Well, my post is partly (but not completely) facetious, while your reply is heartfelt. I respect that but I disagree with you. I mistrust any line of reasoning that starts with the assumption that you have the ability to read people's minds, like you assume when you say "..people who oppose the death penalty ususally just want to feel good about themselves...". You know no such thing. I believe that Society has a right to protect itself from Murderers. I don't dispute Adam's claim that the death penalty does this with more finality than life imprisonment, but I reject his underlying assumption that we never take innocent life via the death penalty.

Don is angry with me. He cannot understand why I support punishing rapists with death while simultaneously defending the rights of the unborn. He accuses me of applying double standards, promoting hypocrisy, and of being "inconsistent." But I am perfectly consistent in my beliefs. And, truth be known, so is Don.

The reason so many people are unfairly labeled as "inconsistent" is because the term "double standard" is applied in such a haphazard fashion. People are actually guilty of applying a double standard when they treat two identical things differently. On the other hand, they are not applying a double standard...
