Since you likely have never served in any of the Armed Forces,I doubt you have any idea of the downsides of a draft,particularly in peacetime.
What rational person wants to be defended by a person who does not want to be in the Armed Forces,and thus doesn't pay attention during training,doesn't do the best they can,is likely to run away in a tight situation and leave other soldiers vulnerable,and likely to be the first to surrender.
