Demand for goods and services begins with the availability of those goods and services. Those goods and services are conceived and executed by small businesses, for the most part. The small businesses which offer products and services for which substantial demand develops become larger businesses and employ more people, who earn more money to purchase more goods and services. The US has, in general, a balanced economy. However, that balance is not static, but rather fluid. When demand declines, whether because of recession or product/service obsolescence, supply declines and jobs are lost. When demand grows, jobs grow. There are no "magic bullet" solutions.

When President Obama uttered his "it worked" appraisal in California a few weeks back, I argued that Republicans should pounce.  The ads, it seemed, would write themselves.  The RNC shoots and scores with a new spot, scheduled to air in swing states:
 


They chose to go with the number of unemployed Americans and the disturbing spike in food stamp usage.  They could have used the dreadful growth numbers, or dropping median household incomes, or the accelerating costs of healthcare, or exploding poverty, or...  In...
