Yes, abstinence should be pushed as the best way to remain free from pregnancy and STIs, but unfortunately abstinence only programs do not work, whereas comprehensive programs push abstinence just as hard, but also give students a backup plan if necessary. I say that after reading hundreds of articles on the topic for university (no, that does not mean a place where promiscuity is acceptable, but a place of education).
For the people reading this article, you ladies and gentlemen are awesome for doing what you think is right, but please, consider the other side too, don't just blindly do what someone else tells you. The first loophole is when you said

Sexual education should equip students to handle pressures without backup. Your argument here contradicts your argument later, in which you say that "people are capable of self-discipline and great displays of maturity". If young people are capable of maturity and saying no, then why should they need the abstinence only program...
