It is not sufficient to balance the Federal budget. We need a Constitutional Amendment that (1) limits the total Federal government spending to a small, fixed percentage of the GDP (say, 12%); (2) requires that the average total remuneration (including pensions and other benefits) of all Federal employees, including elected officials, be no more than the average for all citizens; (3) reduces the salaries of the President, his Cabinet and all Members of Congress in proportion to any Federal deficit; and (4) phases out all public employee unions, because negotiations are inevitably corrupt when they are between workers and elected officials who depend on union contributions for their election.

The crisis du jour in Washington now dominating the news, the so-called “fiscal cliff”, is but the latest in seemingly endless political crises that we shouldn’t be having.

We get two different kinds of problems in life. The real ones – the struggle to work and improve the quality of our lives – and the ones we bring on ourselves through poor behavior.

The more time we must deal with the latter type, the less time and energy we have to deal with life’s real problems and challenges.

The political crises which emanate from Washington are invariably problems...
