To provider a slower, cheaper version of their own service. They take the package to your local post office and the local post office takes it to your door. Saves ups and fedex some time from having to make all the local stops. But the post office does this for so cheap that they lose money. A $25 billion loss over 2 years. That is horrible management.

It's happening, the Postal Service will end Saturday mail delivery as early as August 2013. Packages however will continue to be delivered on the weekend. More from Fox News:
