Texas 6th Graders Design Flags for a New Socialist Nation

I guess I am missing the controversy here, based on the lesson and links given. So, they get to learn the symbols and colors of communism through an activity. What is the big deal? I am missing it. Seems like people want the kids to be historically and visually illiterate. All nations use symbols, holidays, museums, stories to invent themselves. See Benedict Anderson, Imagined Communities for more. This is not to say this lesson is the best way to get that infomation. The students could look at visuals (social realism) and pick out the elements present. They could compare that to visuals from US history.

May be they should have been given an assignment to create a new flag for a Constitutional Republic if they were asked to do so. As one poster above reminded us:
"Give me your children, and I will give you the next 200 years." Joseph Stalin
I hope you get it now!

No, still don't get it.

I would not be surprised if that is how the topic is introduced: What are American symbols? Where do we see them?

In MA students learn American holidays and symbols in first grade!
So, this is a little late.
But yes I do think they should know some of the culture of communism, including its visual culture.

So why does the new flag have to be for a socialist country? Wouldn't it make more sense if symbolism is such a great thing to design a flag for a democratic country?

Is it part of a unit on communism?

Perhaps one of us is assuming too much? It could be me, but ...

"What is the big deal?

I am missing it."

Obviously, you've not spent much time in Texas. Keep reading comments on this article and I'm sure you'll read comments from some natives from the Lone Star State that will enlighten you (that is, if you're able to be enlightened).

You know America’s changing when leftists have even infiltrated Texas schools, EAGnews.org finds.

According to the website txcscopereview.com, a lesson plan for 6th graders in government schools reads as follows:

Notice socialist/communist nations use symbolism on their flags representing various aspects of their economic system. Imagine a new socialist nation is creating a flag and you have been put in charge of creating a flag. Use symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism on your flag. What kind of symbolism/colors would you use?

Texas legislators looked none too kindly on this revelation as they questioned the curriculum’s creators at a...
