I use this method when doing math in my head. I don't support common core and nothing will beat memorization for simple operations. But I don't see a problem with this as part of normal math instruction. As far as part two of the question Rousselle is incorrect. The question isn't asking what 54/3 is. It is asking what 54/9 * 3 is. The purpose is to instruct the student to recognize and deal with multiple operations. If that is confusing the student then it is needed even more. Sorry Rousselle; there are plenty reasons to hate CC but these examples are not among them.

Algebra in the 8th or 9th grade? I took in in 7th grade ('86). Kids really are getting dumbed down education these days.
