Yes, by moderating their anti-New Deal positions they lose some credibility with thinkinig people, but on the other hand they get elected. If they were to be forthright, then in my opinion they would lose, big time. That is why the GOP is somewhat nervous about Paul Ryan being on the ticket. Obama might be able to use him to shine a light on true GOP views about entitlements.
