Truth is more entertaining than fiction. I have been reading about Lady Almina, who was the Countess of Highclere where Downton is filmed. I tis called "Lady Armina and the Real Downton Abbey" It is written by the current Lady Carnarvon. I also am reading a book about the American heiresses who rescued many of these manors with the money of their wealthy American fathers. The manors are now museums or hotels since the agrarian economy could no longer support them, just as the agrarian South could not defeat the North.

Yes, the Jeeves stories of PG Wodehouse often include wealthy American heiresses. They got the titles and their husbands got the money.

The first thing to do is to admit that I’m a Downton Abbey fan. In fact, I’ve watched every episode twice. But in my defense, I counterbalance my Downtonviewings with at least one hour spent with my chainsaw for every hour tuned into Masterpiece Classic.

One of the first things one notices, if one is a regular viewer of BBC productions, is that Downton is unusually ideologically and religiously balanced. One of the other effects one notices when one watches a lot of BBC is that one starts referring to oneself in the third rather than the first person....
