Because they have become acustomed to government that gives them things rather than going out and earning things for themselves. They don't care about freedom at this point because they can still do what they want when they want to, and "government" is going to pay for it. What they don't realize is twofold: One. Someday "government" is going to run out of people who have money the government can take to give to others (in the vernacular -- government will run out of other peoples money). Twogovernment that is so big that it can take money away from some people to give to other people (them) can just as easily take from THEM, especially when government runs out of money.

People on both sides of tax issues often speak of such things as a "$300 billion tax increase" or a "$500 billion tax decrease." That is fine if they are looking back at something that has already happened. But it can be sheer nonsense if they are talking about a proposed increase or decrease in the tax rate.

The government can only raise or lower the tax rate. Whether the actual tax revenues that the government will collect as a result will go up or...
