It is hard to ignore how little the US had gained from almost all it's military engagements since WWII. Hagel is perceived as anti-war. IOW he will appeal to the mainstream - a very clever choice

But where, exactly, is the mainstream on foreign policy in 2013?

Since the Bush II years, "the three amigos" -- Sens. Graham, John McCain and Joe Lieberman -- have clamored for new wars.
