Condoleezza Rice is Right About Immigration, and the Nostalgists Are Wrong

I see. You don't actually believe that the United States of America is a country ruled by laws freely passed by representatives of the citizenry. "The immigrants who sneak into this country" are CRIMINALS, and should be jailed and then deported. This is OUR country, not a doormat. America has ALWAYS welcomed immigrants who LEGALLY come here. What people are upset about are all the CRIMINALS. We should have purchased the Berlin Wall, including the Dobermans and automatic machine guns and put it up on the southern border. Or built a triple electrified fence. I am sick of this, and YOU are not helping one damn bit.

We've set up the system so it is impossible for most Mexican and South Americans who want to come here can ever come legally, due to quota restrictions (same as for Finland). They are our neighbors, maybe we should make it possible for more of them to immigrate legally before we condemn them for not coming through legal channels.

Dean, I disagree. We have always been a "melting pot' and that is one of the main reasons, I believe, that we have become so great. There was always great competition to learn English and assimilate, because of competing cultures. That is exactly what is wrong with allowing so many of ONE ETHNICITY here so rapidly so that assimilation is not even a goal. This has always been avoided because you get what you have now: Hispanic culture/language being stuffed down our throats. And the possibility if them taking our country and making it theirs.

Additionally, Dean, HOW can you say it is "impossible" for most Mexican and South Americans to come here legally. Lou Dobbs, before he was terrorized and intimidated by the La Raza ilk, used to point out frequently that more new LEGAL citizens are Mexican and Hispanic than any other national group. What YOU want is for us all to sit down and decide, consciously, that we indeed WILL become a Hispanic country, which has a huge chance of turning the US into something unrecognizable. I repeat: We need to have assimilation. Your wishes do not achieve that.

Amen brother! This whole nation of laws thing needs to either be adhered to or spat upon.

If THEY need not obey the laws, then maybe I should stop filing my income taxes!

You are so right drrisk2. So right! It is so dumb to argue the contrary that I cannot fathom. Just obey the law, it is that easy.

I agree. The one thing that irritates me about those idiot who support illegal immigration and who say people who oppose it are anti-immigration (including legal) frequently say that illegals are not criminals. Stupid stupid does. If they are here in this country illegally then they are breaking our laws. If they are breaking our laws then they are criminals. It doesn't take a genius to realize that!
On Wednesday evening former Secretary of State Condi Rice picked a fight with a large and vocal section of the Republican base, and I’m glad she did. This confrontation is long overdue. Zero-tolerance law-and-order rhetoric about the immigration issue has become the standard for talk radio and other conservative circles, and I think that this fact puts much of the conservative movement at odds with two of its most important foundations: a view of compassion derived from the Biblical tradition, and a commitment to economic freedom and limited government as an optimistic upward path to prosperity.
Here’s what she said:...
