Tragically, for the foreseeable furture, it's a standoff. Conservatives are not going to give up their guns. It is simply not going to happen. They are not even willing to have that discussion. Our sole course of action is to continue to try and convince them that giving up guns is the right thing to do and, well, good luck with that. In the meantime, those aforementioned numbers continue to rise.

I have only one challenge for Conservatives, who seem to be united in their dogmatic opposition to gun controls and gun bans: just give us a number. How many innocent people have to die before you will finally admit that gun controls and gun bans are the right thing to do? Just give us that number, and when we reach that number, perhaps we can then have this discussion.

Sowell, predictably, gives himself away in the title and first sentence: "gun control" advocates, those of us opposed to the culture of guns and violence are labelled as shrill, ignorant zealots. He stops short of calling us lunatics, although many Conservatives seem to believe that we are, in fact, exactly that. And the pro-gun solution to gun violence? More guns. No lunacy there. Simplistic t-shirt/bumper sticker slogans like "Guns are not the problem. People are the problem." ignore the obvious: without guns, people are highly unlikely to shoot each other. I have never once heard a pro-gun argument that was not rife with similarly specious logic, warped rationale and, dare i say it? willful ignorance.

Not to mention the reality that almost all mass-shootings are committed, not by diabolically evil criminals (you know, just like the ones on television and in movies and comic books), but by law-abiding citizens, some of whom may not have even had so much as a parking ticket, and usually with legally obtained guns! Furthermore, if we follow the "logic" that there is no point in gun controls or gun bans, since the so-called "bad guys" will get them anyway then, by extension, there is no point in having laws against murder, theft, rape, pedophelia or drunk driving, since people are going to do it anyway.

homas Sowell's logic, and by extension the logic of the Right Wing "my guns, my rights" Second Amendment/NRA crowd, is so incredibly flawed that it is hard to know where to begin, other than to wonder if Conservatives ever actually think about the things they say and write. Sowell begins by stating: "The key fallacy of so-called gun control laws is that such laws do not in fact control guns. They simply disarm law-abiding citizens, while people bent on violence find firearms readily available." Somehow, Sowell manages to ignore the reality that the very reason that firearms are so readily available in America is because gun "advocates" won't have it any other way.
