The Supreme Court can solve this problem in less than an hour. Simply declare that the word "marriage" is a religious term, and therefore outside the authority of the Constitution to be legislated on. The end result being that all references to the term "marriage" in all legislation and legal documents can and must be converted to the accurate term of "civil union". Which instantly solves the problem for military couples, insurance policies, inheritance, healthcare, etc. regardless of whether you are gay, straight, neuter, bi or whatever. It also gets the government out of the battle with any religious organization.
